1. Too much salt consumption

According to the National Food Safety Agency (Anses), French people consume an average of 8.7g of salt per day, while French women consume 6.7g of salt per day through food. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends an average of 5g of salt per day. It should be noted that more than 70% of salt comes from foods such as cheeses, cold cuts, pizzas, savoury pastries or soups.

The body gets rid of unwanted fluids by filtering blood through the kidneys, but a balance between potassium and sodium is needed to remove excess water from the cell wall. Too much salt in the diet increases the level of sodium in the blood and disrupts this balance between the two minerals. The kidneys then have difficulty removing excess water from the cells. As a result, blood pressure rises due to the excess fluid, creating additional pressure on the blood vessels connected to the kidneys. Over time, the ability of these organs to remove waste products will decrease significantly.
